Artist Statement

My work examines the role women and gender has played throughout history using allegory and semiotics from myth, legend, and folklore. How can the narrative change when the main character is female-presenting? My medium is handled in the tradition of classical art, but in utilizing the contemporary medium of acrylic, I am looking to subvert expectations similar to the women in my art. The range of women posing for my paintings contributes to the diversity that has been avoided in traditional stories. My work references the Pre-Raphaelite period, with John Everett Millais and John William Waterhouse being an inspiration for my painting method and subject matter. I heavily reference the Pre-Raphaelite method of thinking that emphasizes history and beauty. Being a female artist also influences my art. I seek to empower women through my work, and place them in roles of power that aren’t often seen otherwise. My Catholic background contributes quite heavily to my body of work as well, as I reference Christian symbolism and the detrimental effect that Christianity has had on female achievements throughout history.
